Anna Kovalova’s Talk at Tynianov Readings
On November 2nd Anna Kovalova presented a paper “Anna Karenina Plot in Early Russian Cinema” at the 19th Tynianov Readings.
Summary:
Anna Karenina story became one of the most popular plots in early Russian cinema. The main part of the paper is focused on the two pre-revolutionary adaptations of Lev Tolstoy’s famous novel: lubok-style “Anna Karenina” (1910) directed by Maurice Maître and “Anna Karenina” (1914) directed by Vladimir Gardin. А short fragment from the picture preserved at the Russian State Film Archive (Gosfilmofond), stills from the picture, reviews, memoirs, materials from Vladimir Gardin collection at The Manuscript Department of the National Library of Russia and other “paper” sources prove that “Anna Karenina” (1914) was an innovative screen adaptation made in the spirit of the Silver Age. The paper also investigated a “a sequel” “Anna Karenina’s Daughter” (1916) and pre-revolutionary films closely connected with the plot of “Anna Karenina”, such as “Do You Remember?.” (1914) and “The Bells Ring out, Telling their Simple Tale” (1916).
